Drawing inspiration from her own family situation Alicia Keys has once again produced music with a message on her latest song ‘Blended Families from her album ‘HERE’.’

The song which features a guest verse from New York rapper A$AP Rocky is an ode to blended families. The singer’s own family situation with Hip Hop producer Swizz Beatz is a perfect example that ‘blended families’ can work. The pair are happily married with two sons together and Swizz has children from his previous marriage which Keys treats as her own.

On the track she sings: ‘"Hey I might not really be your mother/That don't mean that I don't really love ya/And even though I married your father/That's not the only reason I'm here for you.’ In 2016, these lines are very relatable to her fans, with many people having step parents or step children and relating to the positive messages in the track. Along with the song, she released a heartfelt statement on her website: ‘It means so much to me and our whole family," she wrote. ‘The understanding, compassion and support we’ve found is a powerful testament to the healing that comes when we choose love. Especially for the kids…the most important part of our lives.’

Above the sentimental plucking of the guitar ASAP Rocky reminisces about times with his family growing up: ‘I remember having four step-moms at nine/Loved Christmas time and birthday was fly/Hit my sisters just for dinner cause the cookin' was bomb/Her mother’s supper made me love her like she took me to prom (uh).’ The two New York natives clearly connected on this track over the complicated but beautiful unit which is called family.

There’s been a mixed reaction to the track with a few people highlighting that Keys started dating Swizz Beats while he was technically still married. However, no one can question Alicia Key’s conduct as an artist and role model. Her career has been almost completely free of scandal; she’s supported important causes for women such as the ‘No Make - Up’ movement and her charity ‘Keep A Child Alive’ shows just how important children are to her. Her music has always carried powerful messages and a testament to her talents is the fact she is one of the most decorated artists in the music industry with fifteen Grammys to her name.
