Anthony Joshua and Vladmir Klitschko have agreed to a repeat of their match last month. Joshua knocked Klitschko out in the 11th round of the fight in Wembley last month, in a move that secured his position as the WBA and IBO Heavyweight Champion of the world.
It was a closely contested fight, and at times it looked like Klitschko would edge the victory. So it’s no surprise that he exercised his right to call a rematch. It looks like the pair are set to face off in Cardiff’s Principality stadium in October this year.
Joshua is keeping fit regardless of whether the rematch takes place or not. According to his promoter Eddie Hearn, “If Klitschko comes back and says he doesn’t want a rematch then we will fight Pulev next, unquestionably.”
Hearn does think that Klitschko will be up for a rematch, saying “I believe Klitschko will go ahead with the rematch so we are looking at dates.” The only thing standing in their way currently however is the Welsh Rugby schedule, as he went on to say, “The Principality Stadium is not really available in November because of rugby so 28 October is the option. Most of December is available but I don't really want to go that late.”
Hearn is also in talks with the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, in addition to venues in China, Dubai and Qatar for the rematch. He said “We are talking to China, we are talking to Dubai and Qatar, we are talking to America [too] … we should know where we are going by the end of June”. So, it look like a rematch between the two world class fighters is definitely on the cards.
Whether the outcome will be the same, we’ll have to wait and see.
