Chance is an artist who has seen standing by the strength of his convictions become perhaps his major selling point. The 23 year old independent artist took the world by storm in 2016 with his album Coloring Book, provided completely for free. At the GRAMMYs last week he became the first artist who gives his / her music away for free to every win a GRAMMY.

In an equally bold move, Chance has turned down over $10 million worth of record deals in order to remain in full control of his music and image. The New York Post reported that “every label is still trying to get him. He’s making too much on his own … he was turning down $5 million advances before, it’s now like $10 million.”

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Chance stated that he had no intention of ever selling his music. Rather he lives off the money he makes from touring and selling merchandise. In the conversation he stated “I honestly believe if you put effort into something and you execute properly, you don’t necessarily have to go through the traditional ways.”
