Last night on OVO Sound Radio, Drake and DJ Semtex sat down together to do an interview for the first time in 7 years in the lead up to Drake’s next album More Life. In the interview, Drake openly addresses a range of topics - from clearing up his ghost-writing scandal, to his relationship with Kanye West and partnership with Skepta. The full interview is below, but here are some interesting excerpts from the tape:
On working with Dr. Dre: Drake shares the story of working with Dr. Dre very early in his career. After a successful period as a songwriter, he was kicked out of Detox sessions for celebrating a $10,000 cheque. He says he still has the hard copy and showed it to Dre when he brought him out in LA almost 4 years ago.
On Kanye’s rant: Drake discusses his feelings on Kanye’s rant about him and Khaled a few months ago. He reveals that he and Kanye were working on a lot of music together at the time, but he didn’t know why Kanye went into the rant, he didn’t respect it and has since distanced himself from the artist.
“I don’t know, I think everybody has their own little things going on, I’m not really sure what he’s referring to half the time, cos in the same breath, I went from being… like working on a project with him, to him sorta publicly shitting on me and DJ Khaled for being on the radio too much. But yeah I’m not really sure, everybody’s got their own thing going on. Again me when I hear that, I just distance myself from it you know, alright if that’s what it is I don’t really even understand the point you’re trying to make but whatever it is that you’re going through, I accept it, I don’t respect it at all. You know cos I feel like me and Khaled are just good people, I’m not sure why we’re the target of your choice that you made that night. And yeah I accept what you’re going through, and I just go and continue working on my own thing. You know the more and more this progresses, the more and more I just feel like keeping to myself, cos its just so unpredictable, you never know which way people are gonna go. I mean streaming is the new record business, so yeah I guess you could call it digital politics, that’s kinda a good name for a song, I might have to do that when I get upstairs.”
On The GRAMMYs: Drake said that he was glad that he was performing at a show in Manchester during the GRAMMYs, congratulated Chance The Rapper and revealed that someone on the GRAMMY panel told him to “blame Donald Trump” for winning only two awards.
On Quentin Miller situation: Drake also explained the Quentin Miller situation; how he met him, Meek’s reason for the allegation and more. “He decide to create this narrative that I don’t write my own music… Anybody that was in those rooms, that worked on that project knows that I am one of the best writer period.”
On beef with Meek Mill: “I’m sitting here thinking you’re ready for it… I thought this was like 3 months in the making. When I dropped ‘Charged Up’ just to see what the preparation level was I realised ‘you’re not ready'”. – Drake on Meek Mill lashing out. “I knew I had to retaliate because I realised he was unprepared.”
On ‘Back To Back’: “My biggest focus the entire time was ‘I cannot disrespect Nicki Minaj’… I respect revenge when it’s warranted and it was warranted. I’m not proud of it… It didn’t feel great but that’s what had to happen at the time.”
On Skepta: Drake had been a fan of Skepta for a long time and was linked up by Oliver. Speaking on the artist he stated “I felt like he should just be bigger than he was. I think that the best rappers in the world are in London. I just think that the complexities and the cadences and the way that they piece music together… That’s been my formula for life is like ‘ok I’m gonna do the club sh*t but I’m also gonna give you bars.’”
Working in Giggs: Drake revealed that he has 4 songs with Giggs. 1 for Giggs’ project, 2 for More Life and 1 lying around.
It would appear that More Life will be premiered on the next episode of OVO Sound Radio.
