Philadelphia native rapper Meek Mill was recently and controversially sentenced to 2-4 years for the violation of his probation from a 2008 case.
His situation has sparked much backlash towards the unfair judicial system in America which disproportionately affects African Americans. Since Meek Mill's sentencing there has been much support from the Hip-Hop community and general public for the MMG signee.
We will always stand by and support Meek Mill, both as he attempts to right this wrongful sentence and then in returning to his musical career. - Jay-Z
Many agree that there is a disparity between the punishment and the crime. Author, Van Jones explains his take on the situation eloquently on Wendy William's show, as seen in the video below from 1:45:
However, no moment has been more inspiring in the string of events since the sentencing as a large group of supporters gathered outside a Philly courthouse demanding the freeing of Meek Mill. With many media outlets present and athletes/celebrities/artists such as Julius Erving and Rick Ross speaking to the protestors, the crowd broke out into a rousing sing-a-long of what is widely regarded as Meek's best song, 'Dreams and Nightmares Intro. As recently reported, the FBI are set to launch an investigation of the Judge at the helm of the case, hopefully this leads to some positive news regarding Meek's unfortunate situation.
