Introducing one of the most exciting acts of 2016: Jorja Smith
Who is she?
She's a 19 year old soul singer-songwriter hailing from Walsall, near Birmingham. She burst onto the music scene late last year with her single 'Blue Lights', and followed it up this summer with a raw, self-filmed track and video called 'Where Did I Go?'
What has she been up to since then?
She has just returned from a supporting slot on NAO's recent UK tour, and news of her music has reached high places. As a result she got a co-sign from Drake a few months ago, calling 'Where Did I Go' a "summer favourite".
A taste of the project?
It's called Project 11, and was released today with 4 tracks. It was co-written and produced by Charlie. Smith described the first song "Something In The Way" as an "ode to unrequited love". Throughout the EP you get a very stripped back, natural feel with raw vocal performances and natural instrumentation. Perhaps this is most evident on the track 'So Lonely', where Smith is accompanied only by a piano, whcih is increasingly rare these days and frankly should be applauded.
Yes, she's joined by Maverick Sabre and Thea Gajic on two different renditions of 'Carry Me Home', both very emotive tracks.
