“I would say I’m a believer in letting people be people”
The darlings of alternative RnB in the UK and the US have teamed up in a dope new video shot in London by videographer David Camarena. The track was produced by Kehlani’s trusted collaborators Jahaan Sweet, DJ Dahi and DJ Relly Rell. The central theme on the track revolves around what both artists bring to the table in their individual relationships, acting as a new school female anthem.
Early in the track, Kehlani riffs “I’ll pick up your your 3am call chick / Love & Basketball chick / I’ll move your car chick / Late night trips to Target”. Shortly after that, Little Simz jumps on the vibe beat to share her own impressive traits: “I try my best to be loving”, yet she warns “Don’t take my kindness for weakness”. Steady dealing with madness / So I pick up my chalice / Cause what’s life without balance?
The song ends with a live sample of Little Simz and Kehlani performing the song and harmonising with each other over it.
The drop comes at a time of mass activity for Kehlani, who started the year avoiding near tragedy after the breakdown of her relationship s with RnB singer PARTYNEXTDOOR and basketball player Kyrie Irving. The pressure of these intense relationships almost led her to take her life only a matter of months ago.
Since then, a resurgent Kehlani has released a string of records such as ‘CRZY’, ‘Distraction’ and ‘Advice’; all of which will be on her upcoming debut album ‘SweetSexySavage’. The album will follow her successful mixtapes ‘Cloud 19’ and ‘You Should Be Here’ in 2014 and 2015 respectively.
In a recent interview, the artist revealed that she is very nearly finished with the album, saying “I’m definitely in the last part of it”. She added, “I’m in the final run. I’m doing all the tweaking and bringing in people to give me opinions … dope people that I trust, other artists and producers that I work with … I’m putting tracklists together, thinking of tracklists, plotting on artwork”.
The album will be out on January 27th, 2016
