Listen To The Highly Anticipated Creed II Soundtrack

Producer Mike Will Made-It details “rare collabs” on blockbuster track list ahead of movie.

1st Dec 2018

Mike Will Made-It is the executive producer behind the soundtrack for Creed II, the sequel to 2015’s Rocky re-boot, Creed.

The soundtrack is a collaborative effort between Mike Will Made-It, Creed II composer Lugwig Göransson, and music supervisors Jen Malone and Fam Rothstein. The track list includes Kendrick Lamar, Bon Iver, Vince Staples, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Tessa Thompson on a track with Gunna, and many more upbeat tracks, perfectly positioned on the emotionally charged movie. ‘Creed II: The Album’ caps a year of hip-hop-heavy hit soundtracks. Kendrick Lamar curated February’s Black Panther release, which featured Travis Scott, The Weeknd, SZA, and more, while Future enlisted Lil Wayne, Ty Dolla $ign, Miguel, and others for the soundtrack to June’s Superfly remake. It appears to be a growing trend that originated back to the success of the first Creed movie, with music from The Roots, John Legend and Meek Mill. In a statement, Mike Will Made-It explains his thoughts behind his creative process focusing on the importance of anticipation for success.

“There was a time where movie soundtracks had people just as excited as an artist’s album, and that’s the feeling I was going for when creating this project alongside Ludwig Göransson and Fam Rothstein. After people hear the music, I want them to say movie soundtracks are back. I approached the music by first watching Creed II and then creating a playlist of songs people could work out to, chill to, vibe to or to get them through any struggle which matched specific scenes in the movie. It’s important to show the new generation that soundtracks can be just as exciting as traditional albums if put in the hands of the right curator.”

Music remains highly infused within Creed II with the character Bianca Porter (Tessa Thompson) and her musical career. In Creed II, Bianca's hearing loss is a major part of her story as she continues with her singing career and confronts the fact that her hearing issue may be something she could pass down to her children. In 2015's Creed, she was an unsigned singer working on recording an album at home while knowing that her hearing is deteriorating and that she would eventually go deaf. The character is a win for representation because of her hearing issue — she's shown wearing a hearing aid in both films and she and Adonis (Michael B. Jordan) both know some sign language. The soundtrack, through its connection to characters within the film, drives an emotional bond with the audience, guiding the story’s highs and lows with a diverse range of music to accompany their themes.
