9th Dec 2017

Elon Musk and Tesla are developing their own AI chip.

The announcement came from the machine learning conference NIPS, which Musk attended. At the conference, he stated that Tesla is “developing specialised AI hardware that we think will be the best in the world.”

He continued by stating “I wanted to make it clear that Tesla is serious about AI, both on the software and hardware fronts. We are developing custom AI hardware chips”.

The technology would give Tesla an advantage in the race to release self-driving vehicles. During the conference, Musk also reiterated his determined timeline of two years to get to Level 5 self-driving, where humans can take naps in the backseat and let the car take the wheel. He also argued that AI may become exponentially smarter than humans in between 5 and 10 years.
