Jorja Smith has shared the video for her new track “Beautiful Little Fools”. The title is inspired by a line in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel The Great Gatsby. Near the end of the novel the main female character Daisy is seen to address her little child, wishing that she would “be a fool - that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.”
The song was inspired by this sentiment, and Jorja channeled her own feelings and frustrations regarding it with her modern brand of jazz influenced soul. Writing candidly about the track on her website, she explains: “I'm so excited to share my next video to my song 'Beautiful Little Fools' with you all on Vevo. I wrote this song when I was 16 years old after reading The Great Gatsby. It's a very special song to me as I wrote it to help myself. To assure myself that all I have to do is be myself. I feel as young girls grow up they're slightly tainted by what the media says is 'beautiful' and I feel like my song can be a little help to them. We are all beautiful in our own individual and special ways. Enjoy x”
This is the first music video that Vevo is funded. In November 2016, Vevo selected Smith as one of this year’s Dscvr Ones To Watch artists, and now the video platform has produced the video for her track “Beautiful Little Fools”.
James Moodie, senior manager of music and talent at Vevo, said “It was clear from the outset of meeting Jorja that she has an amazing talent. It’s been a privilege to be part of her journey since, lending a hand to support her vision.” The video was shot in London’s Rivoli Ballroom and directed by Hector Dockrill. Smith is an artist who has been given a promotional push early last month when Drake posted a photo of the artist’s EP, Project 11, on his Instagram.
