When former One Direction frontman ZAYN tweeted this week that he had new music coming out ‘soon’, his fans were very enthusiastic to find out more. Some were very excited, others were skeptical about how ‘soon’ that release might come. The artist, who reassured his fans that he genuinely had new music on the way - has now released a full track. It’s a tropical track called “Still Got Time”, featuring Toronto-based RnB artist and producer PARTYNEXTDOOR (PND).

The track is dominated by the Caribbean influenced beats that have characterised PND’s latest. It was produced by Frank Dukes and Murda Beatz, two Canadians who are currently on a hot streak - both having recently worked on “Madiba Riddim” and “Blem” on Drake’s widely acclaimed ‘More Life’. “Still Got Time” is the first single on ZAYN’s upcoming sophomore album - due for release this summer. The album will follow his 2016 debut ‘Mind of Mine’, which hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and featured the chart-topping hit “Pillowtalk”.

The track follows a number of collaborations for the solo star in recent months. Since leaving One Direction, he has worked with Usher and Chris Brown on “Back to Sleep (Remix)”, Snakehips on “Cruel” and M.I.A. on “Freedun” - not to mention is wildly popular “Pillowtalk (Remix)” featuring Lil Wayne. His collaboration with PND signals a continual departure from the pop sound that he spent much of his earlier career creating. It also echoes similar genre-blending tracks such as Calvin Harris’ “Shine”, featuring Frank Ocean and Migos.

In a review by Pitchfork, “Still Got Time” was said to “feel naive, but it sounds great”. We’ll have to see whether ZAYN’s core fans will allow him to continue to move away from the pop-centric sound that he built his career on, but with this summery tune we think he’s off to a solid start.
